Cool venue, wasn’t overly crowded and the drinks were well priced.

Basically a pokies venue — a single blackjack table and one roulette wheel were all that ran. Rules follow the usual pattern, $15 minimums, dealer stands on soft 17. For proper table action I’d point you toward Wrest Point instead. Credit though, every employee was genuinely warm and pleasant, no attitude at all.

The pokies are what bring me in. We’ve stayed several times and the rooms hold up well. The machines themselves would be far more pleasant if the chairs weren’t so punishing though. A couple of hours is my limit before the seats leave my husband and me aching. Zero comfort whatsoever. Same chairs year after year, only deteriorating further. I’d happily settle in for longer sessions, but it’s just not worth the discomfort.

Twelve years since our last visit and it wasn’t good back then either. The entire venue looks tired and thoroughly dated. From outside it presents fine, but cross the threshold and you’ve time-travelled to the seventies. Food quality reminded me of a badly managed nursing home — the roast lamb came out dry and chewy, potatoes overcooked to rocks after stewing in a bain-marie, and nothing was even hot despite us arriving right as dinner service opened. Having previously worked at Crown in Perth, there’s simply no comparison. Even Hobart’s Wrest Point is excellent — modern, with an exceptional roast. Baffling that two venues under the same owner can differ this much. We won’t be back to throw money away here.
