Really good venue. Huge floor loaded with pokies and table games. Sat down for poker and the 2-3 game had plenty happening — roughly six tables running on a Tuesday evening. You buy chips over at roulette about 50 metres off, which is no drama. Rake sits at 10% capped at 20 AUD — steep, though bearable. Dealers were excellent.
Took the whole crew out for an evening here — the apartment suite was flawless, and each blackjack dealer we sat with cracked jokes and chatted away, which lifted the whole occasion. Big mention for Ryan on the blackjack tables, an absolute character who made everything ten times more fun.
Anyone used to the Brisbane or Gold Coast versions of Star is in for a letdown at this one. For starters, playing any machine requires a card plus punching in a PIN every single time. On top of that they made me redo my card photo, which meant queuing for three quarters of an hour! Members of Oasis or Sovereign elsewhere will feel short-changed too. Three free drinks are included but the range isn’t the standard found at the sister venues. Sovereign especially has a thin pick of machines.
Calling the service here disappointing would be putting it mildly — it was flat-out unacceptable. From when we walked in at 9:45 on a Friday night in late January, the people at the entrance showed a stunning absence of professionalism. What passed for customer care was dreadful and nowhere near what you’d anticipate from a venue with this reputation. We’d literally just left Crown, and the difference was jarring, almost embarrassing — the welcome here was a sad imitation. The whole thing cast the place in a terrible light and the bad taste has stuck with me.
